The Original

In 1966, Don Sheldon flew materials and carpenters to the nunatak—a rock outcropping from the glacier—to build the property's first structure, often strapping wood and supplies to the aircraft's exterior. This 200-square-foot hexagonal building, dubbed the 'Mountain House,' served as a basecamp for numerous first ascents of area peaks and attracted leisure-seekers eager to behold the amphitheater's splendor from every angle.

YOUR STAY

Architecture

The Sheldon Mountain House is a 200 square foot hexagonal mountaineering-style hut. One side serves as the camp kitchen, while four sides offer cushioned benches for daytime relaxation and nighttime sleeping. The fifth side is the entrance door, and picture windows on four sides offer breathtaking views of the Don Sheldon Amphitheater and Denali's summit. In the center, a wood stove provides ample warmth.

Requirements

Access to the Sheldon Mountain House is reserved for experienced backcountry travelers, as no guides are provided. The trek to the rustic property is 1/3 of a mile from the landing zone, requiring guests to haul their gear over the glacier. Guests must be capable of crevasse rescue due to the active glacier environment. Those lacking experience can hire a guide or remain on the property, engaging at their own risk. The Mountain House offers a wood stove and propane camp stove for cooking, but guests must bring their food and gear for a true do-it-yourself experience.
